Organizing the text files

We need a method of organizing the text files. Here's my plan: we have categories, and <== those tabs would link to regular webpages (css and html). On these pages we would have subcategory links. Each CMS post is tagged with one of these subcategories, and those links would be searches on the CMS for that tag. That means no vanity/username tags. we chose from a set list of tags, and the subcategory links are searches to those tags. One tag per article.

The searches can either be google ones or some built in CMS thing, but the search result page would have only article titles, no images that take up the whole page. A custom google would search would be best IMO.

Example:

Stop ignoring my plan! It's by far the easiest method of making things browsable.

Are they currently searchable from the forums? If not, I'd implement that feature.

Already implemented. I redid the Category listing a while ago. Plus, users can't make custom keywords.

But I will work on your plan BUT it will only complicate things for the editors/contributors.

Ho will it make it harder? All they need to do is tag.

It would be great if we could transform that image/idea into a Javascript menu which pops out the categories when the user clicks on them :D

    Bump2.

Totse needs to be user friendly in order to succeed. A blog is not user friendly.

Is it possible to add tags to the articles to make them searchable and/or linked with forums?

CMS not blog. Anyway, I finished working with the new main page. I will start working on this next.

The tags should be standardized and short, mostly to make things easier for the editors. See the tags in the BI pic above? Kind of like that.

I was thinking tags based off the title, although there should be an option to add tags when you create an article. I'm using autotagger on my forums, that seems to be working great.

Nah, if there's custom tags then the search thing is going to fail hard.

Hmm, I reread your OP. I already created new categories for CMS. What you're suggesting is, I add more catagories to the CMS that are under Bad Ideas and make a page for it that users can navigate.

How about I create a sitemap and link things there?

I think that Bad Ideas was just used as an example.
What I'm getting from this is that katz wants subcategories like how the old text-files were organized. So that when someone is looking for info on a scam, he won't have to skim through links of "how to annoy your teacher" or "anarchy in the snow".
Not just for Bad Ideas, but for all of the major categories.

My Internet is disconnecting and reconnecting every few minutes. I can't browse totse or use the Internet. It would be awesome if someone can just dump the list here.

    Like,
    DIY:

    BI:
    Scam

    etc

Do it for as many section as possible. I will add them in the CMS and then make a sitemap page linking them. After that I will rework the left menu and make it collapse when clicked.

Wut? Do you get the idea dfg? Specific tags, and pages that link to categories etc. No drop down menus or other fancy shit like that. Drop down menus like that are hell, and there is a reason that they are not often used anymore.

I'm not sure that we need subsubcategories though, not yet at least.

If we don't implement them now when there are few text files, it'll be hell later re-tagging a thousand text files...

It's used to Text files. AND DON"T GET MAD AT THE LIST!

I was busy working on IRL project which uses Drupal 7. It's not fun when you're making lists but the good thing is, I know how to get this plan working.

I don't even know how to use it.

The access is restricted to editors only :). Others can view the content and comment on it. It's just like the Totse Text file system but a bit different. It aims to be the front face of Totse.info. This is the thing that will get us on lifehacker etc.

I definitely think the cms comments should be integrated with the forums in a more meaningful way, like the posts here being in response to the article which is the OP for instance.

Edit to add: That seems like what you were attempting to do with the new cms forum section I assume?

Edit to add: That seems like what you were attempting to do with the new cms forum section I assume?

It's more of a queue based system. I am making an effort to reduce the backlog.

    It's like this:

    Forums = Produce Content
CMS = Publishes them and maintains them.

    A user Google things:
He gets link to the CMS. He read about it and then checks the thread linked in the article or checks the forums.

The point is, unlike other models these two things work independently. The aim is to make totse content the standard. All it takes is some feature articles for lifehacker, times, newsweeks.

They won't bother with a forum but they will look into a CMS article.

Plus, from SEO point of view. A CMS has a better chance than any forum of making it to the top.

I posted on article for my IRL project and I did some minor linking. I got 3800+ unique views. It nearly reached 50% of the alloted bandwidth. That's the power of CMS.
The reason you don't see much activity here is because the content is different. It's not targetted at one party.

Plus, it's hard to post quality content, do marketing, SEO and other things all by yourself.

So, although it might look like the CMS isn't doing anything but in reality it's helping us maintain a better ranking and once the content is there and it can easily be linked to reddit, fb, twitter etc.

I am just adding the categories. For them to be functional. I would need to create a list menu. I am currently linking the sitemap and then I will make a custom menu. Then we would need to sort the guides.

Well yeah A sitemap is all well and good but the tabs (the things people will actually click on) still lead to blogs, not categories. That was the whole point of this idea: no more blog-- instead, an "archive" of text files.

Dude, I am working on it. We're using Tags, it will always lead to the page with more content. Let me work on things.
