This topic is very relevant to me. I remember at one of my old jobs, and this was roughly from when I was 28 years old, this girl who sat next to me said that I would be a cougar if I went after this young dude in our company, and he was in his early 20s. I was so upset to hear her say that, because I thought cougars were all 40-50ish women. I even scrutinized my face in the washroom for a long time to convince myself I didn't look that old.

Having said that , a "cougar" is also a woman that actively seeks a much younger man .
