Using USB webcam for survelliance

I've done this before but I've had the recordings saved into an external HDD.

Is there any way to have the recordings saved online? I've looked into web/ftp servers but I don't understand shit.

Is there a 'size limit' to an ftp server? What's the difference between both? And what would you advise?


I figured if I had them stored to the HDD, the burglar could always take the disk along with any valuables.

I'd go with the VLC option, but I'm not sure if you can record the video. If you want to upload it to an FTP server then the video can't be any bigger than the space you've got on the server's hard disk, obviously

So lets say the robber takes the hard drive, will the ftp server be rendered useless?
