Disposing and decomposing and oxidizing of lithium metal

Lithium metal being a very reactive and combustible material should definitely be handled carefully and disposed of properly somehow. We don’t have too many recycling areas around and I assume most of everyone just throws the stuff in the trash. Other than igniting it safely in a barrel what are some other safe ways to dispose of lithium metal ? I think it oxidizes into a powder after some time, when it’s a powder it is no longer dangerous to water ignition or combusting from humidity. Can it be barried in same or dirt ? Does it need to be held under solvent at all times ? Can it oxidize while being held in solvent, but not submerged under solvent? As if it were in solvent without a lid, would it oxidize into a lithium oxide powder that way safely ? Or just hold it in non humid area at room temp till turned to powder ? What are some safe alternatives to disposing and handling other than burning in barrel and just keeping it under solvent?
