why don't we try turning on guest posting? Maybe anonymous could help bring some life to this site.

There's always a mod online, I'm sure they could handle the IP bans.

It's fine as long as long as they get less privileges as a guest like not being able to access the porn forum and having 60 second flood control.

That and as long as it is captcha.
  • KatzenklavierKatzenklavier Regular
    edited December 2010
60 seconds is too long. 30 and a recaptcha is OK.
  • KatzenklavierKatzenklavier Regular

I think not having a captcha is big enough motivation. Those things fucking suck.

Yeh gotta limit it a lot a lot, or else this will turn into 4chan.
  • edited December 2010
I think everybody, even members should have to do a recaptcha every time they make a post anywhere. This will curtail the mindless homophobia and trolling that run rampant on this website.

Should make a security question to answer before each post is submitted:

    "Are you straight (be honest)?"

Good idea, but we have to restrict their privileges otherwise no-one will sign up. Maybe a character limit, captcha thing is a good idea, the inability to post images or change font, no access to porn forum, etc.

I will implement it in some forums but don't expect wonders. You will get spammed and raped for it.

^I will hand you the details when I come back from work. I am bit extended atm. So, it would really help if you guys propose some design changes for the CMS and etc bits. :)

I wonder how well this will go... Seems like a cool idea, but only if we're not spammed up the ass and guests actually contribute.

Guest posting is now enabled in HB, Users can only post replies in threads.

It works, capcha is a bitch imo. This is a big risk if someone decides to CP us. But it's HB so it's a good place for some testing and lulz.

HB only? I think it'd do the most good in BI, BB, Mad science, Lab tips, BLTC, etc.

All the "fringe" forums. HB is just like /b/.

Also, could you make unregistered say "anonymous"?

    anonymous IS /B/!

I am just testing this atm. I will slowly implement it other test forums. This does take away any potential users :(.

I don't think it does, It encourages ne posts. Especially for BI, BLTC, BB; some person comes and asks a question, if they like it here they'll register.

A question requires a ne thread though, so I'd give them that option.
  • edited December 2010
Do you think that this will just end up in people bitching/trolling through anonymous guest accounts?

We can prevent that easily. Plus, it's hard to bitch and moan here ;). Hey, it might give you few newbies to play with.

If it were not for the CAPTCHA, I would leave my account and become a guest.

Maybe before they submit the post, they have to agree to certain terms, like if they want to troll, they have to register an account or else they will be ip banned from guest posting :p
  • MayberryMayberry Regular

Also, should guests be allowed to have a username?

Good idea, these terms and conditions would be great.

No, I think that all guests should be left with the generic title of "unregistered".

I think this could be a great idea.

Not only can we potentially shrink the contribution barrier for new users (through things like stumbleupon) but as we are a close knit community, the anon accounts can be used to post embarrassing content.

perhaps we should make it clearer than "no registration is required to post"

We need to incentivize registering. All swear words and dirty language should be censored and if they want to use them, they have to register :D

^ I think that would just piss people off and cause them to leave rather than sign up.
    Two things i just noticed:
Guests can post pictures and I don't see a "ban" button for them. Guests should be restricted to text and nothing else if we want to make them sign up (plus they could spam the shit out of us with pictures if they wanted to). Also if guest spamming occurs we need to be able to ban these little fuckers if a global mod or an admin isn't online.
