While the movie is successful in representing the story, it is in no way spectacular standing alone.
The novel on the other hand is quite good. As an adaptation thereof, it is highly praised primarily on the basis that it is a Kubrick film and the cinematography in comparison to an outstanding plot.
As well, I would more so classify it as being an eerie suspense over horror as it more oriented toward the deranged/delusional.
Hmm, one of my favorite movies, no accounting for taste I suppose. The suspense builds slowly I agree, but the ending is pretty good. I saw it pretty young, at the drive in, and it scared the bejezzus out of me.
