ya know, i made a thread a while back about how i didn't get Zappa.

He's definitely an acquired taste. I sorta like his stuff now. Some of it is really funny.

I turned onto Zappa in 74 at the tender age of 12. Many of my friends growing up didn't get him and I took some ribbing for listening to him. But it is like I used to say to them, you have to get past the "humor" of the lyrics, see them for the social commentary that they are, and then forget all that and just listen to the music. He was a fantastic composer and one of the most underrated guitarists of all time IMHO.

Try listening to some of his more recent work like the whole Joe's Garage set or even Shiek Yerbouti. While they are still the 80's maybe some of the social commentary in the lyrics will be more relevant to your experiences.

Take a listen to this, it is all instrumental. This may give you an appreciation for his talent with an axe.

Variations on the Carlos Santana Secret Chord Progression

Give it a few to finish uploading.

I only saw a live performance once. It was News Years eve at the Atlanta Civic Center. Zappa had more people in his band on stage than Cananda does at a naval training exercise. One of the best live sounds I have ever heard next to the Moody Blues.

Another one of my favorite Zappa numbers is Dirty Love. (ignore the moth in the video this clip had the best sound track I could find on Ewetube.

Here is really great live cover of Dirty Love by Steve Vai.
