The Best Of Totse.info - Ebook/PDF

edited August 2011 in Spurious Generalities
I was just chatting to Famthegeek on Skype and we got talking about creating an Ebook, composed of the finest guides on Totse to date. The Ebook will then be submitted all over the internet, including Torrent/Warez websites and will be like a modern day cookbook of information on a wide range of subjects. The Ebook can be updated every so often as well, with new guides and articles being added to it and then re-submitted to the internet.

I think we need to specify a few sections for the Ebook to cover. Here's the list of sections, and we'll add content to them now.

What Is This Ebook?

Recent Events and Information

Bad Ideas

Network Insecurity

Better Living Through Chemistry

Oral Indulgences

We need some guides to add! This is where everyone comes into play - you need to choose some guides to be added to the book and explain why you think they should be added.

Good idea?

so its more like a newsletter
It will be a kind of news letter, but it will contain the guides from the last release. Witch means that it will grow bigger over time.
Thinking of a one month release cycle.

As far as I envision it, it's more similar to how the coupon thing was, were every couple of months we'd come out with a more improved version.

Lols what ever happened to our magazine idea? This is actually a good idea though. BLTC, OI, and BI are really the best forums for the book.
It will be kind of like a magazine, it will contain news about totse.info, but mostly tutorials/guides! and maybe some sort of member of the month page?

Lack of content at that time.

I added some sections which I think would be good for the Ebook! These need to be populated with content with each edition, so we're going to need to select content to put into the sections. I think that it should be down to the section moderators to decide which goes into each edition or not, but anyone can help out. I'm just throwing ideas out there at the moment.

Anyway, I need some feedback. What do you think of this layout? Any more sections to add? Etc etc etc.

I think we are good to go with the sections you have selected. Now we only need content to fill in them.

Look at how the site is full of shit like this: http://www.totse.info/bbs/showthread.php/18476-Make-Love-To-Your-Washing-Machine and this: http://www.totse.info/bbs/showthread.php/18314-Totse-Instant-Roll-On-Making-Your-Love-Life-Better.

I don't see much worthwhile content on here. There's a bunch of porn (Can't find that anywhere else can u???? LOL), some kidiot threads dedicated to topics like selling stolen cars, trying to commit insurance fraud in a way that won't work, and getting high on benedryl. Oh, and people are still butthurt about spectral and daguru. If anything this site has gotten worse over the past few months.

Yeah, I see that a few people still work hard and try to come up with new projects and whatnot to promote the site. This current idea of creating a totse ebook to distribute all over is a great idea, but unfortunately I don't think there are enough knowledgeable users on here to fill an ebook with interesting content. Most of the totse.com textfiles are out of date, so you can't really recycle them. I don't see enough interesting or provocative textfiles on here to fill an ebook. It seems like practically no one on here knows anything about explosives, which was what got most people to find totse.com to begin with. That kind of info wasn't readily available 10 years ago. Now it's easy to find.

Totse.com filled a need. It provided information that wasn't found elsewhere. What do you all have to contribute? I mean honestly, threads like "sex with a washing machine" are considered worthwhile? Why post shit like that outside of HB? What would a totse.info ebook offer? Think about this from an objective point of view. What would you accomplish by taking garbage threads from here and turning them into a .pdf?

Sorry, Gary, but I really have no desire to help with this project. Looking at the current state of totse.info I feel the same way I did 7 months ago when I deleted my guides and resigned as mod. Nothing has improved. There are still only 16 members online, yet the forum stats say there are 3600+ active members, which is laughable. I'm disappointed that this is how the site turned out after a year. Yeah, it looks pretty decent, but this place is basically cocklet, jr. with the same kind of e-drama and same worthless threads.

Alright, seeing as I normally shut the fuck up and sit by reading this stuff, I guess I'll put in a few of my thoughts.

Could we do it? Most definitely. This is totse.

Remember how big we once were?

Remember how many registered members we once had?
(Hint: It was over one million)

    We can do it.

The major problem that has been stated many times in the past is that we do not offer anything the rest of the internet does not (For the majority). People can use facebook and google and 4chan to find out whatever the fuck they want (Or at least get a general idea on what they're researching).

So, how to compete with this?

I believe the answer is organization and quality. Google is useful for finding ancient relics of information on dead forums, and shittons of guides of whatever you can imagine. But when you do that, you have no clue who wrote the guide, or even if it's half correct. The writer could have been talking completely out of his ass.

4chan has tons of real, intelligent people. But the kidiots failures vastly out number them, so it is rare that you find useful gems of information.

What I believe we should have are detailed articles on subjects, accompanied with quality photographs of whatever process the article is describing, in a friendly format for human eyes to read. Only tried and tested articles would be allowed, to ensure quality.

Quality of the article would include everything from formatting to understandability, effectiveness and quality pictures to company the process of which is described.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I absolutely hate the new trend of video tutorials. In my mind they are a waste of bandwidth. People tend to be misunderstood, distracted by unusual accents or bad camera work, quick to judge based on the visual appearance of the individual. It would be much more effective to have a hard, text-based article or tutorial. Text cannot be misunderstood if the process is properly worded, and pictures are worth a thousand words.

I agree completely, but there is no reason we cannot outsource. Other long-lost websites and forgotten about domains exist with great guides on them that we could read, edit and improve the quality to the point where it is a publishable piece of work.

Giving proper credit would be a must though. Even if we are only the delivery system of information and not the creator, we are still just as useful. The internet is a shitpile that needes to be waded through to find quality material, we can do the hard work for the viewer.

It seems like practically no one on here knows anything about explosives, which was what got most people to find totse.com to begin with. That kind of info wasn't readily available 10 years ago. Now it's easy to find.

I know a wee bit, enough to make a few 'explosive devices' out of ordinary chemicals. I feel this is information everyone should be aware of. Knowledge is power, right?

It is easy to find, but most of it is unsafe tutorials that are more likely to land you in the hospital or the ground. Tutorials and articles that explain the common misconceptions and relay the dangers involved would prove to be invaluable.

Sorry, Gary, but I really have no desire to help with this project. Looking at the current state of totse.info I feel the same way I did 7 months ago when I deleted my guides and resigned as mod. Can't argue this, it's completely true. But we can always strive to better outselves, sooner or later we will succeed.

I could see stuff like that in an Ebook. Off to the sides of articles in little thought bubbles, kind of like mad magizine and it's random off-to-the-side comics. Just something unusual and lulzy to look at.

What do you all have to contribute?

Sure, most people on here seem like kidiotic trolls. But we are all individuals with our own lives and jobs and areas of knowledge. If you go to college, write articles about what you are learning that would be useful to others.

If your job includes activities individuals may want to attempt in their free time (Such as engineering/building structures), it would be of infinite value to those of us who want to learn for free.

Take me for example, as I don't know the rest of you all that well.

I grew up fishing in Alaska every summer on a salmon gilnetter. I know how to run a boat and how to fish.

I've learned a lot about circuits and electronics in highschool and my free time. If you asked me to, I could make a motor controller for an electric gokart, or an annoying device that would be easy to conceal and emit loud beeps every minute. Or use relays to amplify the speaker on a disposable cellphone to trigger a coil of nichrome wire for the detonator of an IED. So, I can make simple electronic devices.

I've been around computers since I was a kid, taught myself how to remove viruses, reformat computers, set up networks, crack wireless passwords, etc.

Surely some of that is useful information to some of you. Think about your own lives. Do you cook? What are you going to school for currently? Learn any tricks that may be of use to the unenlightened masses?

We all have things to contribute, even if we are not aware of it. We all have useful skills.

Then again, this was all the rambling of a stoned sleep deprived individual who just came in from digging a hole in the ground, and patching up a friend who accidentally cut his wrist open trying to fan a fire with a dinner plate. Believe what you want.

We actually have quite a few great articles which can be used, so that's not a problem. No, we're not going to recycle stuff written on totse.com, we will use our own stuff. Don't worry about the state of explosives articles and whatnot - yes that stuff is all over the web right now. That's not what Totse is all about though, during your absence Fang we've been modernizing stuff. Articles about having sex with a washing machine aren't written often, and they're pretty funny in moderation. It's not like we're going to publish that in an Ebook

Finally regarding your whining about traffic - how long have we been online again? Give it a chance. It might take 5 years of hard work to get this place off the ground but who gives a fuck? It's good fun and it's worth the effort :) We literally have to rebuild the userbase with FRESH faces. Old Totseans won't come here because to them, it's nothing compared to Totse.com. But we don't care about that, because we're not following in Totse.com's footsteps. Fresh users are hard to find thanks to information being available all over the internet. We're working hard though, and we WILL succeed in the end.

    BLTC:
    OI:
Yes a couple of mine are in there, but I tried to get the 3 I thought would be most popular from each section. I also suggest if anyone has anything such as
    • Trip reports
    • Small fiction segments
    • Factual recounts and advice
    • General "lifehacks" and experiences

    Then add them in too?
  • edited August 2011
Personally I'd like to see some hacking stuff in there too, but a lot of that stuff has been written by me :( I want to add the guide to hacking kiosks in there too.

Thanks for your work though RemadE :)

I tell you what. If you make the call as to which of my guides I should add to the Ebook then I'll go ahead in adding them :) I'm all for the spread of information, it's just that I don't want to seem like a douche bag by adding too much of my own stuff. I'm sure you understand, but I'll let you decide what I should submit.

Sound like a good idea to you?
