Alternatives to Photoshop

Anybody have any suggestions of alternatives to Photoshop? I want to start learning how to shop pics but don't feel like buying or searching for a good Photoshop torrent. From what I've been seeing on Google searches, GIMP seems to be most people's favorite. I figured I would ask here first before I tried anything.

You got shit loads of scripts, fonts, gradients, brushes etc, etc for it as well. It accepts PS brushes (.abr) as well.
