Naked Lunch - William Burroughs
Island - Aldous Huxley
Food of the Gods - Terrence Mckenna
The Dharma Bums - Jack Kerouac
Understanding the Media - Marshall Mcluhan
There are probably more but those in particular stand out as the all time "best" books I have read up until now.
To be honest I don't really feel fit to give a summary. It's a layered, surreal piece of writing. I think if I tried to describe the events of the book it would sound pretty weird and wouldn't do it justice. If you're looking for something interesting to read I recommend it.

zen and the art of motorcycle maintenance-robert pirsig
walden/civil disobedience-henry thoreau

Even if his writing skills aren't phenomenal, he can incorporate some really cool research into his books which makes them worthwhile.
They're fiction. His research is pretty much all crap. I like realism in novels (and accuracy in depicting events, like surgery or engineering, etc.), but you can't really consider anything Dan Brown incorporates as "research."

I have to agree thats pretty much what turned me off Dan brown. He prevents shit as fact then being how I am Id always have to go see whats true and what wasnt. I like my fiction and non fiction seperatly. to answer the thread though id say the best book Ive ever read was Mein kampf not the greatest writing but it had a profound impact on how I view the world. Also anything written by David Duke id fully recommend its very informative.
