The Art Of Moving
parkour.jpg

Parkour (sometimes abbreviated to PK), or l'art du déplacement (English: the art of movement) is the physical discipline of training to overcome any obstacle within one's path by adapting one's movements to the environment. It is a non-competitive, physical discipline of French origin in which participants run along a route, attempting to negotiate obstacles in the most efficient way possible. Skills such as jumping and climbing, or the more specific parkour moves are employed. The goal of a practitioner of parkour, called a traceur if male, or traceuse if female, is to get from one place to another using only the human body and the objects in the environment. The obstacles can be anything in one's environment, but parkour is often seen practiced in urban areas because of the many suitable public structures available such as buildings and rails.

The term freerunning is sometimes used interchangeably with parkour. While freerunning is more to do with expressing yourself within your environment, parkour is aiming to get from A to B the fastest. However, there is some controversy over the exact definitions of the two terms. Though disputed, many "parkour purists" say that the biggest difference has to do with theatrics. Free-running involves a lot of trick moves, particularly aerial rotations and spins. Because these moves are merely showy, not economical, and do not actually help the participant to get from place to place, they are considered contrary to the nature of parkour. A free-runner may also move backwards in order to make a move as flashy as possible. This is contrary to the philosophy originally laid down by David Belle. Although Sebastian Foucan co-founded parkour, he is more often associated with the sport of free running.

Now, to be honest doing this requires hard work and dedication along with great stamina and some huge balls. I personally love watching people do freerunning or just climbing walls without any problems. Unfortunately, due to various reason, I can't do it in Pakistan. If I try I will look odd and retarded because no one knows about this and no even cares about it.

Doing Solo training requires some knowledge and you need great mental control. I tried balancing myself on walls and did some basic stuff. It seems my body is aging badly and I really need to fix that issue. Jumping up and down, is fun but it's also extremely hard on your body. So, unless you know what you're doing, I suggest you stay away from this.

Seems like you could use this to run away from cops. I'm surprised this doesn't get used more often in movies. Would be much cooler than your typical running away scenes.

You'd be surprised mayng. It's actually pretty common, or at least has grown over the past few years, everybody wants to cash in.

Ok so I attempted an initial try at this and failed terribly. I tried to jump a bench in my backyard and I hit my shins and ended up with my face in the dirt. It seems this really will take practice but dammit im gonna learn this.

Take baby steps mate. Don't over do it. Start with running and flexing your body and then go from there.

I heard the French just took credit for it (as if someone can actually get credit for "inventing" moving on stuff...) but in reality it is from Russia and used by the street criminals to run away from cops.

I like PKing. My friends don't really get the appeal and would rather stay at home on their computers but its a lot of fun. Most of them aren't that athletic though. I'm not great at it but I can jump in between walls and across some close buildings. I'm skinny, fast and very agile so this helps a lot. There aren't too many good places for it in my area though, mostly just downtown. Again, I'm not great at it but I try and have a lot of fun.
