You buy sticks of RAM and put them into the slots on the motherboard. How much RAM your computer will take depends on your motherboard and OS (64 bit or 32 bit OS). You have to know what kind of RAM (DDR, DDR2, DDR3) and the speed as well. Download something like speccy and you'll see what kind of RAM you have now. You can probably put in 4gb of the same stuff if your comp isn't that old. More than 4gb is overkill for most people.
