When I have matches, I will add more pictures, but hopefully you'll understand the jist of this guide
Incendiary/explosive air rifle rounds are rather easy to make once you have the nack of it. It's fun to shoot these at a hard surface (that you can ignite a "strike anywhere" match on) as they go off with a nice flame and poof of smoke.
My Father taught me when I must have been about 9 years old, and so every once in a while I use this as either a party trick, or just to pass the time in the garden.
You will need:
- A .22 air rifle
- A few .22 pellets
- A few Swan Vesta (aka strike anywhere) matches
- A Stanley knife (sharp)
- A candle, lit (for wax)
- A pair of tweezers
Step 1
Take your .22 pellet and cut off the head with the sharp Stanley Knife so it looks like so (you can also use a .20 pellet, as it is big enough, but a .177 one is..well don't even go there):
A before and after shot
Make sure to lightly press against the tip/head of the pellet so as to not deform the shape and fuck up the round, otherwise it will not fire correctly. It may take a few attempts, but you will get there.
Try to make the cut as even and straight as possible so the match head has a good, solid base.Step 2
At this point, light your candle and leave it off to one side.
Remove the head of the match in the same fashion as you did the pellet. You want the cut to be as close to the end of the head as possible (sounds like a home circumcision guide). Just do what you did above, but it's wood, not lead this time.
Step 3
Grab your tweezers and dip the top of the bottom half of the pellet into the hot candle wax. Now this does take some practice - I'm not gonna bullshit you.
So remember, in one hand you have tweezers, dipping the
top of the base of the pellet into the candle wax. In your other hand, have the match-head.
Remove the pellet from the candle wax and hold the match head onto the pellet,
allowing it to dry. Also do not allow for the wax to drip down the pellet too much (a bit is forgivable as it will come off when fired or pushed into the loading breech). But over time, you will be able to get it neater and thus more likely to stick on. It is
imperative to make sure that the match head is attached securely. I have had a few come off when it was fired, so it's trial and error if you don't get it at first.
Like so
Get the match head as level as possible, otherwise it may ignite in the barrel and that will be shit. Yes, shit. Won't do much damage but still, y'know. Air rifles cost money. This is the stage where most people fuck up, so it may take a few triesStep 4
Load that ammo, which is a pellet, just with a strike-anywhere match for tip, and fire against a hard surface. It's quite a fun little project if you're bored for a few hours.
Remember: Keep the matches and candle away from one-another, and always treat a weapon as though it's loaded.
