  Lye is legal. You can get it anywhere that sells soap making supplies.

  Lowes and Home Depot won't have it, but the smaller hardware store chains do. It's in the plumbing section. It's around $5 for a 16oz bottle.

  Also, mix one mol lye with one mol HCl and you have saltwater. Evaporate the water and add resulting salt to your french fries.
