I am using Red Hat 7.2 via Vmware. I tried using it in Virtualbox but it didn't work. So, I am using Vmware for it. The funny thing is the Vmware tools don't work on it and whenever I install them they halt the system and crash it. Now, since VMware manages the X-Server I can't really use any graphical display. So, in short, for hours I have been spending my time on root terminal making users and downloading rpms for Oracle 8.1.7. I had t experiment a lot to get this in working condition.
So, far I haven't killed myself but honestly old Linux installations were a bitch. Now I am using Winscp + Terminal to move things along. It seems to work because I move and copy things and untar etc things with ease.
You should try it.
