Clerks

Director:
Kevin Smith

Cast:
A bunch of nobodies.

General Information:
Director Kevin Smith owes a lot to last week's FDT director, the late John Hughes. Smith uses similar character development and story progressions in Hughes style. Though Smith's work is a lot more vivid in language use and themes, a certain modern gut level of immaturity remains the subject of the protagonists. Dante Hicks represents an everyday, slacker-pessimist. His friend and co-worker (if he can be called that), Randal Graves is an immature, self amusing jester that gives slacking a new name. This is one terrible day in Dante's life, both for the self evident stress of the mid-life crisis he's putting himself in, and in his failed relationships with two women.

Movie:

This kick started Kevin Smith's career, who originally thought he'd be poor and broke ten years later, laughing at how in-debt he'd put himself with his credit cards making it. The opposite was true however, and he's still a power to be reckoned with in many forms of media. Please feel free to discuss your favorite/worse Smith films, projects, etc.

Regards,
-Grey

I love any kind of 90s film, and Clerks is no exception. One of the finest films of its time.

It was awesome. I watched both movies but while watching Clerks I didn't know the history behind it and some jokes didn't really work for me because of my background but after rewatching it, I loved it.

I dig most of Kevin Smith's work, and this is by far NOT an exception to that. He generally uses great character development to make the storyline flow properly. The decisions and actions taken are true to the character.

One of my biggest quips with Smith is his self-deprecating personality. He seems to feel his material is shit. While most artisans of any sort do, there is a difference between humbleness and completely shit talking yourself. It does NOT make me want to continue watching his material if only because of his publicized lack of confidence in it.

Kevin Smith was great until he got the big head after Mallrats or sometime around there. Now he's just too arrogant, and he used Ben Affleck too much for my standards. Also, Chasing Amy pissed me off because it's obvious he learned everything he "knows" about lesbians from porn.

When Jersey Girl came out, that was the end for me and Kevin Smith. No romantic comedies in this house.

Clerks still fucking rocks though. :)
