Do they still use rotary engines. I havent seen a mazda engine in a while, and last time I did it was rotary. It used to shoot flames out of the tail pipe though

They are doing allot with cam timing,The intake cam is controlled by an electric actuator and the exhaust cam has a hydraulic actuator.
With this set up the ECU can effectively control compression and a ton of other aspects like throttle position. On a steady state cruise your foot position on the throttle may be 1/2 throttle but if you look at the actual throttle position its at wide open throttle.
Fuel pressure runs 3000psi yep 3000 psi that's no typo, its direct injected. The injectors fire multiple times during the compression stroke.
The Skyactiv G is a non supercharged miller cycle engine that means it needs a vacuum pump so you has power brakes at an idle.Link.

Your going to have to be part of the space program to fix a car anymore.

The RX-8 uses the rotary engine.Rotary engines suck in a regular passenger car they need to be driven HARD all the time other wise they get carbon buildup on internal engine parts.
The biggest problem we have with them is low compression due to carbon buildup.
