I'm thinking this place could use both. Both serve different purposed in a way. Thanks are used of for useful posts and rep is used for funny or cool posts. Idk I'd personally prefer rep if we could only have one but thanks is still cool.
Some other sort of unique system that is actually able to track contributions instead of popularity would be nice & a way to encourage some positive posting.
We should vote a committee into place that determines the value of contributions, and good effort toward the community would be reciprocated with food stamps and retail store coupons sent to the individual's address.

No need for a committee. The community already does that internally. You just have to open your eyes.

Much like when you yourself must travel through a sandstorm, the cosmic winds of my galaxy prevent me from opening my eyes. I must wander the Universe blindly in my quest for knowledge.:(
Seriously though, if you're not just fucking with me, then where are my food stamps?
Reputation.
First of all, it is non-public. I mean, for the first 10 years or so everyone has just one green square anyway, as it is pretty difficult to get more than 100 rep points. Not that it matters anyway.
What that means is that it will not make this place any more gay with users flaunting their "thanks counts", new users being scared away/intimidated etc.
Secondly, it's fun. Yes, it's fun to receive private feedback on your posts. In this sense it's a lot more personal and interesting than "thanks".
"Thanks" are not so bad, but only if:
a). There is no public "thanks count" - maybe only in user profiles.
b). You can sort your "thanks" by "last thanks given". Seriously, the system on Zoklet is fucking retarded.
Neither. Posters will become respected without a system, and posts don't need "thanks" to be recognised as good.
But that's not the point. Nobody judges another person (or their own respect) by their "rep", and as I said, it's not publicly displayed anyway. On Totse, everyone had a single green square, and that was it.
Nobody uses "thanks" to recognize the good posts from the bad ones either. It's more useful to just entertain the poster than for anything else.

I think the poll should have a neither option. Personally I don't think that anyone should need incentive to post good posts, they should try and put effort into every post no matter what.
i thought you guise wanted this site to be like totse.?
They do, but Totseans are naturally idiots and/or drug addicts and don't know wtf they're saying. That's why Zoklet failed with polls, because even though they all voted for something, it still sucked.

lol ^This. They were doing it wrong. I facepalmed when they started following poll results without even thinking or doing some research. Luckily for us we have a simple model of Totse to follow and which actually encourages users to treat each other like equals, contribute and share information.

It's a major part of what made zoklet gay imo.
Learn from mistakes people.

I say go for it
You don't need a collection of thanks or a rep bar sitting by your name to encourage you to post.

Or lots of red ones.:D
EDIT:
This
It's only a "dick measuring competition" if you view it as such.
I'd like to divide that by zero, please.

Not focus on cosmetic things.
Thanks is a faggotry system.
We
need
neither.
Simple as that.
Right now, you can subscribe to a thread and then move it to a separate folder. Takes a bit of work, but you get your favourite threads in one place.
QFT. Why is there no "neither" button.
Heh! that's what I asked.:D

do we really want a bunch of faggots sucking eachothers dicks on the internet?
That was fun lol
Lock this thread now, or at least trashcan it.
Even better, do both.
