I was actually curious and Wikipedia'd it the other day and all I got was that it's a middle eastern dish that is now becoming mainstream in western culture. I guess there are also about a million different versions.

The falafel balls are the crucial ingredient. Aside from that, mine had hommus, tabbouleh (onion, tomatoes, parsely etc), salsa, chilli, uhhh lettuce...Fuck I'm sure there was a couple more things but I ate it already
Oh yeah it usually comes in a pita bread pocket. Can order them from most kebab places in Australia but I got a great vegetarian place down the road that makes epic felafels.
