Whenever I download the video driver/chipset I need everything gets fucked visually. It looks like I'm in safe mode but I'm not. Without the updated driver things look fine but I need it for directX/gaming. Help please? I've been at this for hours.
For one thing, don't try to install the video drivers until WinXP is FULLY setup. In that case, WinXP should be getting you to the desktop in VGA 256 colors only, which SHOULD NOT be an issue for ANY WinXP install. It should not be a requirement to install current or updated video card drivers while setting up WinXP... you should be able to skip that and continue. Once WinXP is FULLY setup in VGA 256 color mode, you need to install DirectX 10.0, THEN install the correct video card drivers from an executable file downloaded directly from the video card manufacture's website.
It's an Asus u81a with Intel Core 2 Duo T6500 processor, Intel GM45/46 Chipset - Integrated Graphic and it also says Intel GMA 4500 (M)(HD) with an Asus u80a motherboard Intel GM45 (Cantiga - GM) + ICH9M (Base) chipset

On a laptop I would not recommend drivers from the chipset manufacturers site. Instead get them from the Laptop OEM site. Most often the drivers on a chipset manufacturer's site are either non existent or are generic versions of the drivers which are non revision specific. When Dell and HP order video and other chipsets from Intel, ATI, and others they are often order with OEM specific instruction sets that require the correct OEM drivers for full functionality.
Even when this is not the case you are still more likely to get the correct driver for the correct revision of the chipset for your unit by getting your driver from the laptop site and not the chipset site.

Yes, I agree. I always have better luck with the drivers from the manufacture of the device in question, but what you say is absolutely true in most cases.

See, this is why I like you Spec. Even though we are in disagreement over an issue in another thread you have the maturity to not let it spill into other unrelated conversations.
But yeah, if the OP would give some info maybe someone could help him out here.
Pretty much the only problem I'm running into now is when I try and download the graphics drivers (http://support.asus.com/download/Download.aspx?SLanguage=en-us , Intel Graphics Driver for XP under VGA) I've even tried the ATI one and the same thing will happen: when I get it installed my graphics go to shit like they're in safe mode or something.
I think it may have something to do with me not having a video controller on here yet? I can't find one for the life of me.
^Do that and install drivers from Intel Website. Use the VGA controller drivers for your current chipset. Using Intel Identification Utlity helps as well.
When you're done with that change the resolution to the default one.
Then go to>
run>dxdiag> and run the video tests from there.
Whenever I download the drivers it won't let me change the resolution. I'm almost positive all I need is the actual graphics controller before I get the updated drivers.
Okay so when I go to the Intel website for the driver it comes as a Mobile Intel 4 Express Family or some shit like that, and I can't find a download for a controller. SO I'm assuming this one download should come with it all?
I'm using an Intel GM45/47 Chipset - Integrated Graphic / Intel GMA 4500(M)(HD) PCI graphics card according to hwinfo. I've gone to intel.com and all they have for this chipset are embedded and none are for Windows XP from what I can tell.
Intel Core 2 Duo T6500 processor
Asus U80A motherboard
Intel GM45 (Cantiga - GM) + ICH9M (Base) chipset
^ Other specs on the laptop that may help.
I've been trying so hard to get this thing working. Please help me, Dfg. You're my only hope.

I just downloaded and installed both of those to the same result. One thing that I want to try is I have this program on my computer from when I put XP on it called Intel Graphics Media Accelerator Driver and it's like a video controller. I want to get that on my friends laptop to see if it will help any but I can't find it.

I had a hunch it may have something to do with the bios. I just download the zip file, burn it to a disk and enter my bios setup with the disk inserted to update it?

Yep.. that should set up the graphics controller for the motherboard.

I already have a version 205 bios on here, I'm just going to look for an update.
I just checked and I'm already running SP3
Now I'm looking more into the drivers I downloaded, the XP pack to be specific, and it says they're for all the i3+ processors and I'm only running a Intel Core 2 Duo T6500

What video chipset is it running?
If it is a Dell post the Service Tag#
Have you installed any and all motherboard chipset drivers 1st?
What about XP SP3?

Then Google you Laptop model or download http://www.hwinfo.com/
Use that program to check which graphic card you're using.
Then go to http://downloadcenter.intel.com/ and select that driver and use it.
