You can be my favorite. I've been drinking, so feel free to ignore me. Also, I don't post that much, and haven't seen you much. So that was really just said for posterity's sake.
She speaks a truth that nobody has had the balls to address yet. I understand the whole attitude about free speech and not wanting to alienate new users on in a "new" community. I also understand the current attitude of erring on the side of caution in regard to letting people say whatever they want. This is magnified by many of us having seen (or suffered) first hand the result of ban happy mods who silence anyone who disagrees with them or causes them embarrassment (butt hurt) as result of our experiences at Zok's house of STFU.
But when users like Fatty and BHD (just to name the two most prominent examples) who's only apparent reason for being here is to drop useless shit (which they mistake for trolling) into serious discussion threads for the sole purpose of derailing intelligent conversation, drawing attention to themselves, or harrasing others whom they have some childish vendetta against are tolerated in the name of free speech it only drives new members away. That or it demonstrates to new users that this type of behavior is permitted or even encouraged here.
When you send that message to people who are new to Totse it will only do two things.
- Cause new users to act like asses and further degrade the quality of the content on Totse and thereby contribute to an increase in the second result.
- Casue new members, who are looking for intelligent content with which to interact, to pull up stakes and pitch their camp on another board with more content and less stupid cunts.
The only way to deal with this problem, that I know of, is to simply not permit this type of action outside of HB and B&M.Currently the infraction list has no provision for purposeful and repeated off topic flame garbage in serious discussion forums. It has been argued that an off topic infraction would be detrimental to free speech. In fact it is that type of behavior which will ultimately prevent Totse from being the haven for free speech that most of us desire.
I ask you, what good is a community that allows anyone to say anything anywhere if the asshats have driven off new members and old who simply won't deal with idiots in serious discussions.
Now I am not talking about the occasional dig or poke in a thread that is more tongue in cheek or a simple comment designed to remind a poster not to take themselves so seriously. I am talking about users like Fatty and BHD who have made it a point to post in almost every thread they respond to with garbage like the following:

This was in Oh the Humanities!, a serious discussion forum in a thread started by a mod. What kind of a message do you think this sends to a new member who is looking for intelligent content?
I know there are many who like Fatty or think he is somehow funny and a good thing for Totse. But the sad reality is he is an embarrassment to the community who contributes little or nothing of actual long term value to Totse.
If he were original with his failed attempts at trolling rather than his signature puerile attempts to make others angry with 3rd grade level insults and 10 year old tantrums directed t anyone who he has his e-penis in a twist over then at least he would add something to Totse. But as it stands we could get any 8 year old with Tourette Syndrome to spew nonsensical obscenities from their keyboard and get the same value that Fatty and his like offer to our community.
If you want to keep new members then this problem must be dealt with in an effective and consistent fashion. That is not to say this is the sole reason why many do not stay. TBH DS needs to lighten up a bit as a member of the staff. He is not a bad guy and does not mean anything destructive by his racial comments and the like. But as staff members we set the tone for new members. If a new members rolls in and sees staff members acting in a less than admirable fashion it tells that new member something that we may not necessarily intend to convey.
I am not getting on DS or saying that he is driving away new members. I am only saying that since becoming a mod I have intentionally bit my tongue on the wording of how I say certain things to most members and how I conduct myslef in general.
As staff members we have a certain level of responsibility towards increases traffic, discussion, and member interest by our actions and our posts. If staff members stretch pages then everyone who wants to stretch pages will feel free to do so. If staff members are seen to approve of behavior and posts such as the examples cited above then anyone with the inclination to post trahs will feel free to do so regardless of the forum they are posting in.
TL/DR = If we permit garbage we will attract garbage and drive out true contributors.
With only 35 posts it is a bit difficult to get a handle on who you are. Try being more involved and you will find more people will at least identify with your persona for better or worse.
To say you are not anyone's favorite with only 35 posts is not reall giving anyone a chance to like or dislike you.
Anyone who gathers that much info on worthless posters gets a +1 respect from me. It'd be higher, if only that would actually drive them out.

You bring up some good points and I agree that stupid one liners shouldn't be allowed in the serious forums. In fact I will admit that my anti drug threads against fr0st byte were a bit immature and stupid on my part (I need to stop posting when drunk) which is why I haven't responded to them lately. The racism I will continue to post and hopefully you and others have seen that I can back up the racism with legit arguments and I think in the non serious orums mods as well should be allowed to post whatever they want.
As far as FATTY goes he does contribute to this forum imo. The constant abuse of the report feature needs to stop and I agree with some of his posts such as the ones in your thread in the politics section needed to be deleted. But he has also contributed some good content in the weapons forums and other sections and he hasnt done anything worthy of a ban/
I don't see the big deal in the occasional troll post as long as they aren't flooding the thread people can ignore it. I don't want this site to become like zoklet where a guy like ArmsMerchant just deletes all posts that he doesn't agree with or finds insulting because he is butthurt by them.

Bro, I am not trying to stifle anyone's free speech, including yours. And while I will admit I have a certain amount of racially biased views, I don't agree with racism for the sake of racism nor do I agree with your take on racial issues. That being said I still respect your right to express those views in an intelligent fashion. All I am really saying is that as mods we sometimes need to temper our personal view points for the good of the site. This is not an attempt to single you out or in anyway shed a derogatory shadow on your contributions. Just a frank discussion on some aspects of things that I feel could help the community.
The problem with Fatty and his ilk is not an issue of whether or not he contributes anything of use. It is a matter of him thinking and acting like he is above the same guidelines we are all expected to follow. It is his continued pattern of behavior in which he places his desire for attention above all else. He acts as if he can shit when he wants where he wants because he wants. As fucked up as -Spectral's views are on many thing, and as fucked up as his approach (both as a member and a moderator over time) has been demonstrated to be, he does continually make one solid point. It is not always about a single post, often times it is about a sustained pattern of behavior which the offending party clearly demonstrates they have not intentions of correcting.
Fatty clearly falls into this category. He cares little for the well being of Totse and only posts for his own amusement. Users like this will drive new desirable users from this community. You know it, I know, and he knows it all to well.
Nor do I or anyone else on the staff that I have seen. But on the other hand I don't want to see it become a site like Zok's that is a haven for blathering ill-mannered little shits who contribute nothing save their ability to destroy threads and discourage others from creating useful content.

Now how many new users on Totse do you think would continue to put the time an effort required to make a thread like this if users like Fatty are permitted to shit all over it at will as was done in that thread (and as Fatty does on a daily basis here)? The bottom line is it does not matter how many decent threads a user makes if they shit all over the contributions of others.

IMO there needs to be an Off Topic Infraction worth say 4 points and a 10 day expiration for all forums except SG, HB, and B&M. That way, with the present system of PMing with a request, sending multiple warnings if that fails, and then as a last resort infracting them, they would have at least 4 chances to cease and desist before getting a 4 point infraction. That infraction in of itself would not ban them or prevent them from posting in a useful relevant fashion anywhere on the boards. But if they were to pull their shit all day long in several different forums. Thereby earning say 3 PM'd requests from 3 different mods, say 6 warnings form 3 different mods, and finally 3 separate infractions from 3 different mods they would hit 12 points and earn a well deserved time out.

I real hate typing and usually will dictate longer posts. I do OK at exprssing myself in writing in spite of having failed most of my English course in High School due to lack of interest on my part.
