My car stopped running yesterday and started up again today

Before anybody asks about the battery or gas, spare me the stupid questions.

Yesterday Im cruising through the parking lot when the check engine light turns on, and the engine just turns off. I tried turning the ignition, the engine turned over, the check engine light showed again, but it just wouldnt start up. Some lady even offered to jump the battery even though she just heard the engine turning.:facepalm:

So I try a couple times with no luck, and I have to ask my bro in law to pick me up and leave it there over night. Today I went back, and Im just about to call a tow truck, when I decided to try again. To my surprise it started up again, and I drove it home fine.

This isnt the first time its happened either. Last time I got stuck in a city an hour away and had to get it towed back to my house. When I get it back, it all of a sudden decides to start up again.

Anybody know what could be causing this? The car is an 85 chevy celebrity, and it has well over 100k miles on it.

You have an ignition component heating up and dieing on you more than likely

I dont know how much of a mechanic you are, but if you can remove the module and take it to most parts house they can test it for you

Also which engine is in your car? the 2.5L fue injected or 2.8 with carb?

something similar happened to my car, it would turn over but would die out. I checked under the hood and one of my battery terminals was loose.

Sounds like the engine is over heating or like muffins said the ignition is heating up too much. Do you smell any wire type burning when this happens?
