All the states that are going through civil unrest at the moment are not remotely Islamist friendly. It would have served Al Quada well to have issued a few statement about the protests...
Personally I think killing him was a mistake, people can spout all kinds of bollocks about justice but the reality is he'll simply be replaced by someone else and himself be turned into a martyr for the cause. They should have taken him alive, if at all possible, put him on trial and then left him to rot away. Admittedly the American public would never have tolerated this... many of them are just too goddamn stupid.
Where, somewhere like... Guatanamo Bay? America could have stored him in a concrete cell just fine I think.
Instead Obama gets to throw a massive slab of meat to the slavering American public in the form of news that the great bogeyman was slain on his watch. It's a hollow publicity stunt that I suspect will change very little in terms of Al Qaida's operation (see DKR's points above). In fact the American administration know that aside from creating a martyr they may well have made things significantly worse in the short to medium term. But hey, a few lives here and there are an acceptable trade-off for a handful of points in the Presidential popularity poll, yes?
I said somewhere like, i.e. a nasty little shithole that is beyond the law. I doubt such places are in the realms of conspiracy; I'm sure the CIA has lots of little hidey-holes where they can torture people in absolute privacy in the name of state security.
