Microsoft Phone 7 nearly finished

In case nobody has heard, yes Microsoft is working on a new OS for the mobile platform given 6.5 was underwhelming and ancient by the time it finally was released. Microsoft has been struggling to stay releveant in the mobile sector thanks to Nokia's Symbian OS dominating the world wide market and BlackBerry/Apple/Android owning the U.S. They've hyped up this mobile platform for nearly 9 months now (right after the success of Windows 7 release) and like 6.5 it looks as though it's another failure of Microsoft announcing a product/platform too soon and delievering too late in the game. Even though it was announced nearly a year ago, it still isn't due until October/November'ish.

RIM hasn't done very well with their OS platform, yet is majorly successful (thanks to their solid business model), while Android and Apple nudged into the consumer market. It's interesting to know Microsoft is trying to merge both with this platform, but given their recent attempt to pull a Apple/RIM and develop a phone+OS with the "Microsoft Kin" which was cancelled 40 days later begs the question.

What do you think? Does Microsoft have a chance anymore or will it just be wait and see? It bothers me to see Microsoft take a nose dive since Gates left Balmer in charge, so many failures people are starting to ask whether Balmer should just step down.
