Today, Apple introduced the next version of their macintosh operating system, lion. The main thing that stood out to me is the addition of the mac app store, a-la iphone and ipad. This seems like a horrible idea. Sure, in the beginning, the app store will be optional, and you'll still be able to drag and drop applications to install, but I could see in a few years a need for cydia for mac.

Also, the new launchpad seems like a crock of shit. First of all, power users will keep their most used programs in the dock anyway. If I need a program that isn't in my dock, I just bring up quicksilver with a keyboard shortcut. I cannot imagine Apple's version of the quicksilver application launcher being better than quicksilver.

While I understand that many power users are screaming and banging their heads against their desks, this is all for the best. The complex computers we use today are being replaced by simplified, task-oriented computers that are designed to help users work faster and focused on their objectives. Computers shouldn't be tools for computer scientists. Computers should be practical tools and sources of enjoyment for people in offices and studios,

Where do I start killing people.

It would be nice if they left the professional computers out of the dumbing down. The macbook, imac, mini, and air can all have dumbed down software, but not on the macbook pro and the mac pro, PLEASE. It won't happen, though, because Steve Jobs doesn't want to have more that one version of his OSes. Again, when Jobs gets a big head, it's the customer who gets fucked over.

It says they have 70% free apps in the mac app store. That's mostly bullshit, because many companies make free, crippled versions of their software, which really aren't usable.

I feel ya though. I don't think I'll ever buy another mac.

Here's a list of things apple won't allow in the app store.

I actually like Mac OSX. The app store could be really good for developers in terms of revenue and ultimately provide better quality software to the user.

I don't think mac's will ever be a walled garden (I don't see how they could do it on a technical standpoint.) but what will ultimately happen is that users will be trained to go to the 'app store' to install programs they need. This will actually make things easier fro everyone.

I'll never understand how the 70%/30% spit got confused for app price...they were talking about revenue. Apple gets 30% of the cost price; just like the iPhone apps.

    Check out THAT one.

Anyway, it's not hard to use google to find apps. I guess for people who are "too busy" to use google, an app store would be fine. However, it's not a free market one. If apple gets to decide whose apps to allow and whose to not allow then it'll stifle competition. I'd rather be able to dl whatever I want, including porn apps.

Alright, guys, this isn't a windows vs mac vs gnu/linux thread, please discuss that elsewhere.
