Ok second attempt at this after the first one vanished when we went down..
My laptops packed in and I am planning to replace it with a desktop as I never really took my laptop anwhere anyway.
I am planning to use it for Autocad and solidworks as well as a spot of gaming.
The current plan stands like this:
CPU (with the stock cooleer it seems to be possible to overclock it by 1ghz)

I am planning to use an older one seeing as they cost a small fortune at the moment!

Basically, I like the build. The GPU would be an issue considering AMD might release the 7000 series soon but even that is months away, other than that, 6950 is pretty close 6870 at this point when it comes to price range. Moreover, you really need to research different software requirements if you're going to use your rig professionally. A hardcore gaming rig can't be a workstation. I advise you upgrade your RAM to at least 16 GB.
My built:
i7 2600k Oc'ed 4.8Ghz
RAM 16GB DDR3 1333Mhz
Asus Z68 Deluxe
HD6790
Dual Monitors [1080px2]
I do intend to upgrade my GPU but I waiting to see a better upgrade path, plus HDD are effing expensive.
Hmm:

A bit expensive but supports 32GB instead of 16GB plus it's using newer chipset.

Good choice on the cpu though, I've heard those are good for CAD work.
I just find it easy to think of what parts to buy if you have all the options there, and there are many many different hardware choices on that website.
In the end I went with intel and the I3 2120 mainly because
i started reading some worrying things about the bulldozers performance.
Got it mounted on an asus z68 motherboard (so I can upgrade later) 8 gig of ram.
Going to order an asus gtx 560 later.

I shoved in my laptops HDD and was sorting it out when it booted to windows I was just like wtf?
Even more amazingly it's working admittedly it isn't fully working but as a temporary measure til I can aquire Windows 7 64 (at the moment that could be forever since my speed is stuck somewhere between 1-30kb/s..
Oh and the system really doesn't want to boot from the pen drive I prepared pinguy on (changed the boot order etc.)
